UK rubbish bins are filled with over 1 million tonnes of textiles each year.
The National Clothing Collection service is a door-to-door scheme carried out by Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd on behalf of The Salvation Army. Over 400,000 bags are delivered to households throughout the UK each week, and collected a few days later.
As with our clothing banks, we accept most textile items in our bags as long as they’re clean and dry, including shoes (tied in pairs), clothing, handbags, belts, sheets, blankets and towels. Unfortunately we cannot accept pillows, quilts or duvets or anything that is not in one of our branded bags.
The bags are collected by vehicles and collectors bearing our logo. If you see any unmarked vans attempting to collect your donations, or anyone acting suspiciously on days when the donations are due to be collected, please call the police as it may mean someone is trying to steal your donations.
As with all our operations, profits that we receive from The National Clothing Collection Scheme are gift-aided to The Salvation Army to help fund its work throughout the UK. Between 2007 and 2010 alone, we gift-aided £17.1 million to The Salvation Army.
